The Room that Really Saves Thanksgiving
Everyone obsesses over kitchens and dining rooms this time of year. But the room that actually saves Thanksgiving?
The scullery.
It’s the space that hides the mess, swallows the overflow, and keeps the kitchen looking calm when the reality is anything but!
Here’s what we think about when designing one!
Keep the Kitchen Peaceful
In this client’s home, this kitchen keeps its composure while the scullery hums behind that gorgeous stone wall.
Hide the Kitchen Killers
Coffee machines, microwaves, toaster ovens, prep sink, even the second refrigerators and dishwashers—this is where they live. Tucked away, but still easily accessible!
Prioritize Surfaces That Patina Well
This is a hardworking space—let it age gracefully. Unlacquered Brass, Marble, Leather, White Oak and Walnut. They’ll wear beautifully!
Sound Matters as Much as Sight
Dishwashers hum. Ice makers rattle. Vent fans roar. If the scullery isn’t insulated, your dinner party soundtrack may be full of appliance noise. Make sure to design cabinetry and walls with sound absorption in mind.
Accessible for the Little Ones
Sharing your home with little ones? This is a great space for them to practice their budding culinary skills…without destroying the kitchen. Plus, there is something so sweet about watching little hands take pride in buttering their own toast! And, those teenage hands making their own lunches.
The dining room, of course, earns its moment in the spotlight too.
Once the doors close on the scullery, the dining room takes overThanksgiving evening! The table shines, the chairs keep you there longer than you planned, the lighting keeps the stories rolling!
Every great dinner has a mess—you just don’t have to see it. That’s the scullery’s job!
