Stately Lake Shore Highrise

An art-collecting couple lives in an Art Deco high-rise on Chicago's Lake Shore Drive, overlooking Lake Michigan, with a dog named Willis — yes, after the tower. Their collection of art and furniture ranged freely across eras and styles, and they wanted a way to pull it all together, with a layout that could keep up with the many ways they use their space.

The home is a cocktail of the couple's favorite ingredients, mixed until the measurements were just right. They already owned beautiful Art Deco furniture, so the design leaned in, building on rosewood, burl, gold, and deep burgundy, then cutting the richness with modern pieces and art so it never takes itself too seriously. The bolder the upholstery got, the brighter the rooms read. The Dining and Music Room takes its cue from one painting — a Roberto Fabelo canvas over the piano that sets the whole color palette, right down to the Loro Piana silk on the Art Deco chairs.

For all their polish, these rooms were built around a puppy, washable velvet covers and all.
